At the start of this season, HONOLULU is pleased to offer a Skinner Releasing Technique workshop to introduce you to Joan Skinner's teaching approach.
Created by Joan Skinner in the late 1960s in the United States and still relatively unknown in France, Skinner Releasing is both a method for dance improvisation and a somatic practice. Placing imagination at the core of learning, poetic images awaken and alter spontaneous movement. Each class becomes a changing landscape that resonates beyond the studio.
This workshop invites participants to explore and practice some of the foundational principles of Skinner Releasing: suppleness, autonomy, playfulness, openness, and integrity. Music and soundscapes support movement studies, image explorations, and the process of letting go (releasing). It brings together the first five classes of the introductory cycle of this progressive pedagogy, taught alternately by two teachers.
THE INSTRUCTORS
AYŞE ORHON is a dancer and choreographer based in Berlin. She graduated from Artez (HKA) in 2001 and completed a Master’s in choreography in Amsterdam (AHK) in 2013. As a choreographer, Orhon has presented her work at various European festivals. She is a certified Pilates instructor (Stott/Merrithew, 2004), a Shiatsu practitioner (European Shiatsu Institute, Berlin, 2022), and certified teacher for Skinner Releasing Technique™ (Skinner Releasing Institute, 2024). Orhon’s practice is a dance between the somatic and the artistic, between the kinaesthetic and the aesthetic.
CLÉO TABAKIAN is a dancer and visual artist based in Marseille. She graduated from the Beaux-Arts in Paris, and her graphic works manifests the convolutions of the physical self. In her ongoing book project Movement Speculation, her drawings are combined with fragments of an epic poem. She obtained a Master’s degree from the Laban Conservatoire of Dance in London in 2018. Her dance practice is in dialogue with somatics and martial arts. She became a certified teacher for Skinner Releasing Technique™ in 2024. Strongly influenced by this holistic approach, she is working on a forthcoming book on Joan Skinner’s pedagogy in collaboration with two other teachers: Bettina Neuhaus and Ana Stegnar.
